Thierry Despont (1948 – 13 August 2023) was a French architect, artist and designer living and working in New York City.

During the 1980s, he was the associate architect for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. He then went on to remodel the Herbert N. Straus House at 9 East 72nd Street on Manhattan's Upper East Side for the billionaire Leslie Wexner of Limited Inc. fame (a home which later gained additional notoriety as the abode of Jeffrey Epstein).

Among the high-profile buildings in Manhattan he had designed the interiors for are 220 Central Park South, 53W53 (the interiors of the condominiums), and the Woolworth Building.[5]

In the early 2000s, he designed the interiors for Gordon Ramsay's restaurant, the eponymous Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's in London. In 2005 he did alterations to The Promenade restaurant at the Dorchester, including fitting it with an oval leather bar the length of Nelson's Column. Between 2007 and 2010, he renovated the Lambs Club's former clubhouse in New York City into the Chatwal New York hotel.

In 2009, Despont redesigned the two restaurants and the bar Il Pricipe at the Hotel Principe di Savoia in Milan, Italy. Despont worked on the physical conversion of a section of the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan, into the 47 suite luxury hotel Casa Cipriani, which opened in late 2021.

Despont was known for being "the designer of choice for titans of industry," to cite his obituary in Architectural Digest. His clients included Bill Gates, Calvin Klein, Jayne Wrightsman, Annette and Oscar de la Renta, Conrad Black, Leslie Wexner, Peggy and Mickey Drexler, and Peter Morton. "To be successful at my job, one must be very good at understanding not only a client's needs, but also a client's dreams and memories," Despont told the journalist Nina Munk in 1999. "One must know where the client comes from and what they desire. Part of the craft is learning to read people, to see things they are sure about, the things they are unsure about; the things they don't convey verbally, but express through their surroundings."

Thierry Despont died on 13 August 2023, at the age of 75

8/10 Front Pocket Wallet
Color: Black (Front Pocket)
It's a pleasing solution for me. The slim, pocketed design fits well in my front pocket. It probably fits other pockets well too. It's not perfect. But, it's solving for an imperfect solution that Apple is takling with their phones. Tap to pay with phones and digital ID will change the market for wallets. The physical size of cards limits how readily you can access any one card. It takes a bit of extra dexterity to pinch or slide some of the cards out. Ideally you'd have 4 on the outside, with remaining cards tucked in the center pocket. I just need more than 1/4 inch of card face to slide one out readily.

Size
Color: Black (Bifold)
It’s not a thick wallet, which is what my husband likes. Makes sitting or driving for long periods with it in his back pocket better. Has everything larger wallets have. Will purchase it again.

Rugged wallet built to last (even if wallets themselves are becoming obsolete)
Color: Black (Trifold), Color: Black (Trifold)
This is a really well-made wallet. If you’re familiar with Carhartt products, the construction here is exactly what you’d expect: tough, practical, and clearly designed to take some abuse. The material is "700D nylon duck fabric", which feels thick and durable—more like a piece of work gear than a fashion accessory. In the photos you can see the tight stitching, heavy canvas-like texture, and reinforced seams, all of which suggest it should last for years. It feels like the kind of wallet that could live in a back pocket, get sat on, tossed around, and still keep going. Inside, the layout is simple and functional. The see-through mesh ID window is one of my favorite touches—it makes it easy to show an ID without removing it. The card slots are snug and the trifold layout keeps everything organized. There’s also a small zippered pocket, which you can see in the photos along the side. It’s not huge, but it can hold a few coins or maybe a couple of small keys. The wallet also includes RFID blocking, which is nice if you’re concerned about wireless card scanning. On the flip side, that also means you can’t just tap the wallet against a reader for contactless payments. You’ll need to take the card out first. Carhartt also advertises water resistance, which makes sense given the nylon construction. Realistically, most of us aren’t dunking our wallets in water, but it’s nice to know it could handle rain or the random spill (though come-on! How often does that happen with a wallet??) One interesting thing: wallets themselves are starting to feel a little outdated. I rarely carry one anymore, and most of my family uses phone wallets or digital payments. But if you’re someone who still likes having a physical wallet for cards, ID, and some cash, this is a solid one. It’s a simple, rugged, no-nonsense wallet that should last a long time - very much in line with the Carhartt reputation. If you’re still in the wallet camp, this is a dependable choice. Plus it makes a nice gift.
