Recorded partly at Sun Studio in Memphis, the project features collaborations with Bob Dylan, B. B. King, and Harlem's New Voices of Freedom gospel choir.

The album and film received mixed reviews—some critics praised the band's energy, while others viewed it as overblown. However, the album was a commercial triumph, topping charts in multiple countries and selling 14 million copies. It also produced the lead single “Desire,” which became U2’s first UK number-one hit.
