Garland 24-Cell Self-Watering Propagator | Standard Seed KitThe middle tier of our Garland propagator range double the capacity of the 12 cell starter kit, but without the additional cost of the Fast Root split cell technology. The Garland 24 Cell Self Watering Seed Success Kit is properly the right choice for the gardener who knows they want more cells but is happy with the standard self watering setup. At 15. 25 it offers per cell value better than either of the smaller or step up propagators in our range

The middle tier of our Garland propagator range — double the capacity of the 12-cell starter kit, but without the additional cost of the Fast Root split-cell technology. The Garland 24-Cell Self-Watering Seed Success Kit is properly the right choice for the gardener who knows they want more cells but is happy with the standard self-watering setup. At £15.25 it offers per-cell value better than either of the smaller or step-up propagators in our range — the sensible middle option for serious indoor sowing.

From Garland, the established British horticultural brand specialising in propagation, greenhouse and growing equipment. Made from recycled plastic; built to last multiple seasons.

The same proven self-watering principle — just doubled

This propagator uses the same proven mechanism as our 12-cell starter model, with twice the growing capacity:

  • Water reservoir tray at the base; holds enough water for several days of plant uptake
  • Injection moulded support platform — the engineered raised platform that holds the growing tray slightly elevated above the reservoir
  • Capillary matting between the platform and the growing tray; draws water upward by capillary action
  • 24-cell growing tray on top; seedlings absorb moisture through the compost from the matting as required
  • Clear propagator lid traps warmth and humidity for proper germination conditions

The principle is simple: water sits in the reservoir, capillary action delivers it to the cells, plants take exactly what they need. No daily watering, no overwatering, no drought stress. Refill the reservoir when it runs low — typically once a week.

24 cells — properly the right scale for more ambitious sowing

The 24-cell format opens up genuinely different sowing possibilities compared to the 12-cell starter:

  • More varieties in one tray — 24 different seedlings in one compact unit. Three each of eight chilli varieties, or six each of four tomato varieties, or a mixed herb selection
  • Larger batches per variety — sow 4-6 seeds per variety to allow for selecting the strongest seedlings to transplant
  • Succession sowing — some cells for an immediate sowing, others for a fortnight later, all in the same controlled environment
  • Mixed seed and cutting work — some cells for seeds, others for taking soft cuttings of herbs
  • Cottage garden annuals at proper plug stage — raise more cosmos, zinnia, antirrhinum, nicotiana for the borders

Each cell measures the same as the 12-cell starter (5cm x 4.7cm x 5.8cm deep, holding approximately 0.1L of compost). The propagator overall measures 37.5cm long and 23cm wide — properly the right size for wide windowsills, greenhouse staging, or potting benches. Compact enough to remain home-scale; generous enough for proper indoor propagation.

What you'll grow in it

The 24-cell standard propagator suits virtually all indoor seed sowing:

  • Tomatoes — multiple varieties for season-long cropping; sow February-April
  • Chillies and peppers — need longer germination periods and consistent warmth. Try our chilli and pepper seed range
  • Aubergines — another warmth-loving Solanum that benefits from controlled sowing
  • Half-hardy annuals — cosmos, zinnia, antirrhinum, nicotiana, salvia. Sow March-April for May/June planting out
  • Herbs — basil, parsley, coriander, dill, chives, thyme. See our herb seed range
  • Microgreens — the cell size suits short-cycle microgreen production. See our microgreen seed range
  • Salad leaves — lettuce, rocket, mizuna, mustards for early-season harvests
  • Brassicas — cabbages, kales, broccolis, cauliflowers for the vegetable garden
  • Cottage garden seeds — the half-hardy annuals that make cottage borders sing

Particularly good for

  • Gardeners stepping up from a 12-cell propagator — the natural next step when you've outgrown the entry-level kit
  • Multi-variety growers — 24 cells properly suit raising several varieties at once
  • Allotmenteers — raise enough plants to fill a substantial vegetable plot
  • Cottage garden growers — raise the half-hardy annuals that fill cottage borders
  • Cut flower growers — bulk-raise the season's cosmos, zinnias, sweet peas
  • Greenhouse owners — properly the right scale for greenhouse propagation areas
  • Wide-windowsill gardeners — 37.5cm x 23cm fits kitchen, conservatory or utility room windowsills properly
  • Budget-conscious gardeners — better per-cell value than the smaller propagator
  • Anyone happy with standard cells — this gives the capacity benefit without the additional cost of the Fast Root features
  • As a gift for a gardener with serious propagation intent — properly considered without being extravagant

Choosing between the three propagators in our range

All three Garland propagators use the same self-watering principle; the right choice depends on capacity needs and feature priorities:

  • 12-Cell Self-Watering Propagator — the windowsill starter at £10.35. The right choice for a small collection of seedlings, limited space, or first-time indoor sowing
  • 24-Cell Self-Watering Standard (this) — £15.25. The capacity upgrade for the same proven technology. The right choice if you want more cells but don't need advanced features
  • 24-Cell Fast Root Propagator — £17.85. The technical upgrade with split cells, ridged sides for guided root growth, side ventilation slots for air pruning, and adjustable lid vents. The right choice for the serious grower wanting better root development and easier transplanting

The choice is genuinely customer-led. Some gardeners value capacity over advanced features; others prefer the engineering improvements of the Fast Root model. Both 24-cell options work properly for indoor seed sowing.

Built to last — the sustainability story

  • Made from recycled plastic — circular-economy material rather than virgin
  • Designed for repeated use — multiple seasons of seasonal use; not a disposable product
  • Dishwasher-safe — the trays can be cleaned and sterilised between sowings, preventing disease carry-over from one batch to the next
  • Replacement parts available — capillary matting can be replaced if it becomes stained over many seasons

For the gardener who cares about reducing waste, this is properly the right tool — you're not throwing away dozens of disposable seed trays each season.

Where this sits in our propagation range

The 24-cell standard propagator anchors the middle of our Propagation & Growing Essentials sub-collection:

  • Garland 12-Cell Self-Watering Propagator — £10.35 starter
  • Garland 24-Cell Self-Watering Standard (this) — £15.25 capacity upgrade
  • Garland 24-Cell Fast Root Propagator — £17.85 technical upgrade
  • Fungus Gnat Treatment Bundle — the natural pest protection partner; £15.00
  • Fungus Gnat Nematodes — standalone nematode treatment; £9.00
  • Smart Garden Digital Max/Min Thermometer — greenhouse and propagator temperature monitoring
  • Garland Plant Protection Fleece — for hardening off seedlings once moved outside

Together these form the complete indoor-to-outdoor propagation kit — sow indoors in the propagator, protect from fungus gnats with the nematode treatment, monitor temperature, then move outside with frost protection from the fleece.

About Garland

Garland is an established British horticultural brand specialising in propagation, greenhouse and growing equipment. They've supplied UK growers for decades with the practical kit that makes indoor and undercover gardening work properly. Their products are widely used in commercial nurseries as well as home gardens. We stock their range because they make tools that genuinely improve outcomes for the home grower.

A small thought: the satisfaction of indoor sowing scales properly with capacity — sowing 24 little compartments of carefully chosen varieties in February or March, watching them through germination and the first true leaves, then transplanting the strongest into the garden in May. The standard 24-cell propagator gives that satisfaction without the additional cost of advanced features — the simple, proven, double-capacity choice for the serious home grower. The kind of properly considered kit that just gets on with the job.

These were my new "Go To" jeans, not so much after a wearing for a year
Size: 35W x 32L, Color: Antique Indigo, Size: 35W x 32L, Color: Antique Indigo
Love 'em already after only one day of wearing them. I am a 7 days a week, jeans wearing kind of guy pretty much. Office job and recreation. I got scared away from my usual beloved ***tco jeans because of the bad reviews on their site for their now "Made in China" 12.99 jeans which used to be made in Mexico. So off to Amazon to shop for my first Amazon clothes purchase. Found these Antique Indigo Wrangler jeans for just under double the warehouse price. Advantage was they had the exact size I wanted (35Wx32L) vs settling for either 34W or 36W at the warehouse. The waist size was exact. I measured the waist by folding the waist in half and measuring with a tape measure. 17.5 inches exactly (17.5" X 2 = 35"). Didn't measure the length. Color seems to be a tad darker than the Antique Indigo pictured on the website. To me they seem to be in between the Antique Indigo and Antique Navy in color, but that is just my opinion. I guess it could be monitor differences. Doesn't matter to me. Not sure it matters to anyone (it doesn't to me) but I decided to weigh these and compare them to my very worn 34x32 warehouse jeans. These were exactly 30ounces. The warehouse jeans were 27 ounces. These are Made in Mexico of US materials as stated on the tag. These will be my new go to jeans, even at double my usual price, until ***tco goes back to the old Mexican manufacturer. Yes, this is my real opinion not influenced by free or reduced price product for providing a review. Update March 21, 2017: So, here it is a year later. How do they measure up now? I have changed my review from 5 to 3 stars for the following reasons: 1. Weak patch (1/2 star deduction) - The Wrangler "patch" on the back has either ripped or started "peeling" off on two of three pairs purchased. Not that big of a deal as I just remove it completely when it starts hanging. The patch is made of some leatherish paper is the way I would describe it. Doesn't really seem to be cloth and certainly isn't leather. Would be nice and longer lasting if it was real leather. 2. Manufacturing variation (1/2 star deduction) - One pair of the three is maybe one inch shorter than the others. The length of two pairs is the same and long enough to lay on my shoes with a bit to spare. The other pair just barely makes it to my shoes. Not a deal breaker but I am conscious of that pair being shorter when I wear them. 3. Short pocket flaps (1 star deduction) - Not sure how to describe this. The part of the denim that enters the pocket and to which the white pocket material is sewn to, doesn't go deep enough into the pocket. The result is that this part partially pulls out of the pocket (or almost so), making the white pocket material marginally visible. I am very frequently aware of my pocket whites being displayed to the world and am frequently tucking them or pushing them back in. This is the worst aspect of these jeans for me. This might just be an aspect of the way these jeans fit on my body shape. If this denim part that enters into the pocket were just 1/2" or 1" deeper into the pocket, this would not be a problem. So far the durability of the jeans is great, other than the Wrangler patch. They don't really have to survive much in my day-to-day use of them, as I work in an office setting and don't wear a belt with my jeans, but they seem to be a match for the warehouse jeans I used to purchase. Would I buy again? To be honest, I would probably try another brand or maybe another style within the Wrangler family and only come back to these if I could not find anything better based on price and performance. These are okay jeans and I will continue to wear them to the end of their life.
